Max Holloway's chapter "What Africa Has Given America" discusses how cowboys and modern cattle culture can date back to African cow herders. The Fula people of West Africa were great herders who domesticated cattle. They brought their free-range herding tactics to America and gained the nickname "cowboys". The white herders saw this and to disassociate themselves took the name "cattleman".
